We Do It For Aidan!

You may have seen our Lions wearing the recognizable blue or gray apparel with the phrase “Do it for Aidan”. Students and families have wondered- “who is Aidan, and what are we doing for him?” Aidan is a D45 student and son of Rachel Schwarz (D45 Library Teacher) and Eric Schwarz. Aidan has Danon Disease, a rare genetic disorder that manifests as cardiomyopathy, skeletal myopathy, and intellectual disability. Students, families, staff, and community members, purchase t-shirts or sweatshirts to raise funds to support Danon Disease research and raise awareness. Aidan and  Mrs. Schwarz have a special place in the hearts of York Center. Mrs. Schwarz supported the literacy of our Lions as our Librarian for several years.

At York Center, it has become a tradition to wear “Do it For Aidan” gear or blue or gray apparel on Rare Disease Day which is observed every year on February 28th. Additionally, through February the Student Council promotes awareness, inclusivity, and support for people with genetic disorders and encourages students to bring in any spare change they may find. This year, we were able to raise over $1500 ($300 raised by student’s change) to support Danon’s Disease Research. It’s evident that our Lions can and will continue to do all we can to support Aidan, his family, and those affected by rare genetic disorders.
