Ways to Learn at York Center

York Center School is a place where students and staff would like to feel happy, safe, motivated, respected, responsible, and calm. To achieve these feelings, we provide students with opportunities to explore and learn outside of the academic environment. Participating in student clubs/activities is one way that students dynamically expand their learning. For example, through the Student Council, fourth and fifth-grade students help make decisions for our school regarding spirit week themes, fund-raisers, and celebrations. Conservation club helps shape the impact we have on our environment through recycling materials (crayons, markers, bread tabs, plastic bags). They also teach our students to spread a little “green thumb joy” through planting and tending to the many fruits and vegetables we have in our garden. “I loved coming back to school and seeing the little seeds turned into HUGE plants”- said a fourth-grade student. Chorus provides an opportunity for our students to grow their musical talents and build confidence through performance at school events such as Multicultural Night and the Talent Show.

Lastly, the newest addition to YC is the opportunity to participate in makerspace. A makerspace is a collaborative work space inside a school, library, or public/private facility for making, learning, exploring, and sharing. At York Center, we use our school library to explore STEM activities such as coding with Ozbots and collaborative engineering through a cup staking challenge. Ask your Lion! They’ll have lots to share about all of the hands-on learning opportunities.
