York Center Lions demonstrate that compassion and kind words should not be limited to one day of the year! Monthly, on early dismissal days, YC Lions participate in a “YC” or “Your Community” Wednesday. Typically, students are presented with an activity to promote a sense of community, belonging, and pride/ownership of our school. Staff and students are encouraged to wear YC spirit wear, especially the cardinal red “Lions” shirt every student receives.
The most recent YC Wednesday occurred the day after Valentine’s day. The purpose of the activity was to promote and strengthen positive peer interactions with classmates. Each class was provided with materials for students to create a poster. Students were encouraged to walk around the room and write a personal quality or character trait that they admired about each other. By the end of the activity, each student had a poster filled with words of appreciation, encouragement, and admiration to remind them of how they are a valued member of their classroom community. “I loved this activity because I did not know my friends thought all these nice things about me”, stated a third grade student in Mrs. Parde’s class.
Following our next early dismissal day, be sure to ask your Lion about the community building activity they participated in!
